New Year's Resolutions for Seniors

New Year’s Resolutions for Seniors:

Setting Goals for Fun and Health!

No matter your age, a new year can mark the beginning of a healthier, happier version of yourself. Creating doable, trackable, and fun resolutions can help you start the year off right and make it more likely that you’ll keep up with your goals throughout the year.

If you’re a senior and want to make a New Year’s resolution for 2023, here are some ideas to get you started!

Stay in Motion

Whether you’re able to exercise regularly or you’re more limited, we suggest making movement part of your daily routine. However, before starting any exercise routine, check in with your primary care provider to ensure your plans align with your abilities and health goals.

Eat Healthy

From daily meals to small snacks, incorporate plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, dairy, and lean proteins into your diet! If you can’t do much shopping and food preparation is difficult for you, consider enlisting the help of a grocery delivery service and buying items that require less preparation. Food such as whole grain cereal, microwave-ready vegetables, yogurt, and eggs can be healthy and easy to prepare.

Keep Your Brain Active

Sudoku, matching games, chess, Scrabble, boggle, and bingo are great games for keeping your brain active! Apps like Luminosity are also a fun option for any seniors with access to a phone or tablet, and journaling can be an appealing option to keep your creativity and memory in motion.

Socialize as Much as Possible

Socializing is an essential part of life, but it can become more difficult as you age and your mobility becomes more limited. Taking part in clubs, volunteering, and inviting over or calling friends or family should be part of your resolutions for 2023.

Whatever New Year’s resolutions you create, keep things simple and track your progress. And if you find that keeping up with regular activities of daily living – to say nothing of New Year’s resolutions – is more than you can handle right now, consider making 2023 the year you ask for help. At The Landing at Cape Elizabeth, we assist seniors who have Alzheimer’s and dementia with maintaining happy, healthy lives.
